Mega Shark Versus Crocosaurus is a monster disaster film by The Asylum, released on December 21, 2010, in the United States. The film stars Jaleel White, Gary Stretch, Robert Picardo, Dylan Vox, Hannah Cowley and Sarah Lieving. The film is a sequel to the 2009 film Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus but contains little of the original cast from that film.

Plot

Crocosaurus, an enormous crocodile-like monster, bursts out of a diamond mine in the Congo. Aboard the USS Gibson, Lieutenant Terry McCormick demonstrates to his girlfriend Corrine a frequency he devised to repel sharks, though it causes the shark he's testing it on to become more aggressive instead. Captain Smalls calls him to the bridge to identify an unusual heat signature nearby, but dismisses his conclusion that it's Mega Shark, who survived his battle with the Giant Octopus. Before he can drop his hydrosonic speakers into the water, Mega Shark leaps out of the water and tackles the Gibson, killing scores of sailors including Corrine. The ship's weapons are useless, and a pair of tail strikes soon sink it, leaving McCormick the only survivor.

Legatt, a representative from the mining company, recruits hunter and cryptozoologist Nigel Putnam to capture Crocosaurus. When they reach the cave, the monster ambushes and devours Legatt. She snaps up Nigel too, but he knocks her out by driving two tranquilizing poles into her mouth, then arranges for her and her eggs to be transported on his friend Jean's cargo ship. In Los Angeles, Special Agent Hutchinson of the NOAA recruits McCormick, who offers to modify his beacon to attract the Megalodon. The shark attacks the ship carrying Crocosaurus off the coast of Florida, with Jean cutting her loose. Hutchinson pressgangs Putnam into helping the Navy's monster hunt shortly after he washes ashore.

On the USS Lexington, Putnam identifies the giant eggs found on Eleuthera as belonging to Crocosaurus. McCormick, who regards the hunter as a con artist, is skeptical that a second monster exists. Admiral Calvin orders them both to investigate, along with Hutchinson. Using her heat-sensing binoculars, Putnam finds the eggs underwater, along the coastline. Their helicopter lifts off as Crocosaurus bursts from a hillside and Mega Shark approaches the island. Fighter jets rain down missiles, destroying some of the eggs. With both monsters unscathed, the National Guard mobilizes in Florida. A submarine launches a torpedo at Mega Shark, but he catches it in his mouth and leaps out of the water to discard it. Crocosaurus makes landfall in Miami. McCormick suggests stunning her by setting off an arc flash at the Turkey Point Nuclear Generating Station. Dazed, Crocosaurus returns to the sea.

Back aboard the Lexington, Putnam suggests dissecting the surviving eggs to learn Crocosaurus' weakness. Mega Shark destroys a submarine holding one of the eggs, then brings down the helicopters carrying two more. McCormick sees an opportunity: they can use the eggs to lure both monsters to a desired location. Putnam sees the Panama Canal as the ideal trap point, and divulges that some eggs may still be lying on the ocean floor where his ship sank. Another submarine retrieves them, and the trap is set. Both monsters close in on the canal, but Mega Shark clashes with the Navy first. Once both are inside the canal's first lock, fighter jets open fire. The monsters' battle spills out of the canal and into the ocean.

Compiling sightings of previous battles between Mega Shark and Crocosaurus, the Navy realizes that the crocodile has laid thousands of eggs, though the shark has already eaten most of them. One massive clutch of eggs begins to hatch, attacking the Santa Monica Pier. Mega Shark and Crocosaurus close in on another clutch in Hawaii. Mega Shark devours a pursuing nuclear submarine, creating an even greater threat, while Crocosaurus's babies attack Oahu. One knocks the helicopter carrying McCormick, Putnam, and Hutchinson, out of the sky, causing it to crash and for Hutchinson to go unconscious. McCormick, beginning to lose control of himself, says that Hutchinson is his fiancee Corinne, but Putnam attempts to snap him out of it. As Mega Shark and Crocosaurus clash again, McCormick uses his beacon to lure them, along with the babies, to an underwater volcano. Hutchinson retrieves the men via helicopter (having woken up from the incident) and McCormick sets off an explosion which causes the volcano to erupt and consume all the monsters.

In a post-credits scene, Putnam reunites with Jean and convinces him to help him hunt a giant lizard attacking Japan.

Development

The Asylum advertised the film at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival as Mega Shark Versus Giganotosaurus.

Connections with other Asylum titles

The film makes numerous references to Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus, such as an autographed photo of singer/songwriter/actress Debbie Gibson and the Japanese poster of the first film. In addition, scenes of people panicking are reused from the film Megafault.

Marketing

To promote the film, The Asylum participated in a competition to make the next Doritos commercial for Super Bowl XLV. In the commercial, the Megalodon attacks a naval fleet while Capt. Smalls (Michael Gaglio) asks if anything will satisfy its hunger. Then he hears a crunch and sees the janitor eating a bag of Doritos. In the next scene, a helicopter carries a giant Dorito chip over the ocean. The Megalodon jumps and eats the chip before fleeing from the scene as the whole crew celebrate.

Reception

Dread Central gave the film a scathing review, giving it a score of "1 Megacraposaurus" out of 5. The review commented that "movies like this always tread a fine line between anything-goes fun and merely insulting your intelligence, and this time The Asylum may have finally jumped the mega shark." Felix Vasquez, Jr. of Cinema Crazed gave the film one star, calling it "a tedious and horrific mess that at least gives audiences what it wants: A big croc eating people, a big shark eating people, and two gargantuan stock CGI animals battling it out for the fate of Earth. Or something."

Sequels

Despite earlier claims by the Asylum that Mega Shark Versus Mecha Shark would be the final film of the series, a fourth installment titled Mega Shark vs. Kolossus was released on July 7, 2015. The film features a new Mega Shark facing off against a giant robot named Kolossus awakened by Russian energy excavation. The Kolossus is heavily based on the "Colossal Titan" character featured in the manga and anime franchise Attack on Titan, while incorporating elements of the Armada Suits featured in the Asylum's earlier film Atlantic Rim.
